Ready world markets via the port of Liverpool, saw cotton grow rapidly throughout the 19th Century. As mills were built, more people came from the land to work in the industrial towns, greatly increasing their population. A new breed of "self-made" men - such as Richard Arkwright - arose, but for every self-made man there were thousands of workers who toiled in dangerous, noisy, dusty conditions for long hours and little pay. The urban landscape grew at a frantic pace, a new world in which the rumble of machinery rather than the sounds of the country became the norm.
